Meeting Gary Vaynerchuk

In London with the Social Media and Marketing Guru Gary Vaynerchuk.

Gary Vaynerchuk is a master of his craft.  At the age of 22 he grew his family’s New Jersey liquor store into a retail wine store named Wine Library, taking it from a $3 million to a $60 million a year business.

Gary then went on to create with his brother a social media-focused digital agency, VaynerMedia.  Gary is also the author of four books, all New York Times best sellers.

I could go on forever about Gary and his successes, but I recommend you check out his Wiki Page.

It’s Tuesday March 22nd and Gary is in town promoting his latest #1 best seller, #AskGaryVee: One Entrepreneur’s Take on Leadership, Social Media, and Self-Awareness.  Gary has announced via Snapchat that he will be hosting an outdoor meetup in Soho Square at 10.15pm.  At that moment I knew I was going to go and I knew I was going to meet Gary.

It hits 9.15pm and I start to make my way over to the meeting spot.  I arrive at Soho Square around 9.45pm and I can see around 30 people already standing on the corner of Frith Street.  As time goes on more and more people arrive, all networking, posting to social media and live streaming via services such as Periscope.

It’s not far away from 10.15pm and then Gary announces on Snapchat that his dinner is running late, apologises and lets us know that he will be with us around 10.30pm.  Sure enough, 10.30pm arrives but Gary is in the next street down.  By this time there are hundreds of people rushing towards Gary, surrounding him in excitement and awe.  Gary expressed his surprise at the amount of people who came to see him in a snapchat he put out as he arrived at the destination.

I knew that my client, conceptual photographer Mitchell Brown is also a big fan of Gary but sadly could not make it to the meetup.  I connected with Mitchell via FaceTime so that he could be a part of the event.  While waiting for my chance to speak with Gary and while talking to Mitchell, I held up my iPhone with Mitchell facing Gary, he saw and gave Mitchell a wave which stunned him at first but then returned the wave.  What a result!

There was an affectionate and positive atmosphere while everyone waited to have their moment with Gary; he was absolutely amazing.  He signed books, took part in hundreds of selfies and videos and most importantly gave his expert advice to everyone’s questions.  Gary made sure that he spoke to everyone before leaving. What a man!

When it came to my turn I was not disappointed.  I was greeted with a massive smile, a handshake and a “how you doing!?”.  I told Gary that I wanted to thank him for all the great content and advice that he puts out and find him an inspiration.  I then went on to say how I love The Ask Gary Vee Show, he then turned and shouted out the classic catchphrase “The Shoooooooowwwwwww!”, I then had no choice but to (happily) join in.  We then shook hands and I got my selfie with him.

I walked away very happy indeed, although I wish I had said more including how much I love his DailyVee videos.  (You really should watch these ‘behind the scenes’ videos showing how hard Gary actually works!).

It was such a great honour to meet the amazing Gary Vaynerchuk and see him in action with his fans and followers.  He really made sure to take time to see everyone and made you feel like you were the only person there, focusing all his attention on you.  Thank you Gary.
